Today is a very special day….
It’s David’s 25th Birthday!
…and to celebrate we have some exciting news to share.’ The first is the launch of a series of videos called
‘Asperger’s Syndrome Conversations’
where we chat about various aspects of Asperger’s Syndrome and how this diagnosis has impacted on our lives and the lessons we have learned along the way
…the second is book package just to celebrate this very special birthday… but more about that later.
We are so very proud of the young man that David has become. Our Asperger’s Syndrome family journey has been tumultuous and sometimes difficult, but as we were enjoying David’s birthday dinner last night with the conversations flowing from politics, to sport, to university and work, I was drawn back to the days when meal times in our family consisted of nothing but strategies to keep David focused.
Last night we were just an ordinary family laughing, talking and enjoying each others company. Nobody in that restaurant would have known anything different about the young, handsome man sitting at the head of the table directly interacting with the many different conversations, offering to pour drinks and telling us funny stories.
For many, who are walking the ‘just diagnosed’ part, the ‘just starting school’ part or even the dreaded ‘puberty vs Asperger’s’ part, sometimes it helps to hear the journey from another perspective. And with real people telling real stories! So we are pleased to announce the launch of Asperger’s Syndrome Conversations. A series of videos where we are talking honestly about how Asperger’s has impacted on our lives, and the lessons we have learned along the way .
In this first Asperger’s Syndrome Conversations video, I also discovered a few key issues that truly helped me understand a little more about visual cues and how sounds can be distracting for David. Watch the video at the 3:13 minute mark and then again at the 5:30 minute mark and see if you can also pick up what I am talking about.
In the video I refer to a talk given by Temple Grandin, where she talks about Autistic people thinking in pictures. David’s reference to this was very interesting and gave me even greater clarification why it is incredibly important that both Gerry and I continue to work to ‘become the people we want David to be’. He learns by linking what he needs to learn to visual reinforcement. Very interesting and insightful.
Ok, now to our special offer
to celebrate David’s 25th Birthday.
Many families who have purchased the book then have ordered a second and sometimes a third copy to pass on to friends, family and teachers. David and I were talking about this a couple of weeks ago. He is so proud of the book and very comfortable with the story being told to help other families. He continually encourages me to help make the book available to as many people as possible. So, after a long chat around the kitchen table, he came up with a way to help the word get out just that little bit faster. (I am not sure who is more excited about this package – David or me!)
So today, we are launching a new package
That’s 4 books for the price of 3 with only $15 postage and handling
you save over $38!!
A special birthday gift from David.
