The first few weeks back at school for children on the Autism Spectrum can often be a mixed bag of emotions.
Returning to the routine, often the desire to 'fit in' and make new friends, and teachers returning to school feeling more energised can be enough to make the first few weeks back at school less stressful than normal. The opposite can also be the case, with some children finding the return to the school routine challenging.
What ever the case for you, a ...

The holidays are an ideal time to relax, and often you can actually feel the stress leave your body as you become more relaxed.
However, a child on the spectrum often has difficult in recognising the actual physical changes they experience when relaxed and when stressed and often unable to articulate it. By using 'down-times' during the holidays to help them recognise those physical differences, you can set up some great stress reliving strategies with anchor points they can refer ...

One of the things I have learned about being the parent of a child on the spectrum - is that it is just that, a spectrum. Whilst people talk about varying degrees of autism, or where the child sits on the spectrum, I have found that an ASD child can move from one part of the spectrum to the other, dependent upon stress or anxiety levels, puberty, change or environmental factors - or any one of a myriad of reasons ...

Bullying is in the media constantly at the present time and whilst many schools and workplaces have introduced anti-bullying programmes, the fact is this bullying is actually getting worse, not better. Bullying has now become so endemic in our society it has now filtered into nearly every single aspect of our life, and when ever I speak to groups, about ASD or raising children or even to corporate organizations on self-leadership, it is the one topic that raises ...

I first heard about this week’s guest blogger Emily Jones, after reading a story which featured in a local newspaper in Victoria. Emily went to the press when she was being confronted by parents who wanted her child, Ed who is diagnosed with Asperger's, removed from the school he was attending.
When I read Emily’s story a piece of my heart just broke. I remember going through exactly the same experience. So, I contacted Emily, through the school’s principal, and ...

The one thing I have learned whilst on this journey of Asperger's Syndrome, is that people who judge others really bug me!
Many of you who have been reading this blog, or are members of our Davids Gift Facebook fan page, know that I have been following, with great interest, a young man called James Durbin. This morning I read that James has reached the top 10 in the latest season of American Idol. What an amazing achievement.
James, is a young ...

Whilst many children on the Autism spectrum experience bullying, the one threat that they are most prone to is Cyberbullying. Many children with Asperger's and Autism love spending time online, and interacting with friendship sites such as Facebook, Twitter, forums or chatrooms. Online friendships can be less threatening and less stressful as they are often able to connect with people, just like them, all over the world.
However, with any online activity, whilst it can be fun and interesting, there ...

Around Australia over the next few weeks, thousands of children and their parents, begin the excitement of preparing for a new school year.
While most parents see the start of school as the beginning of 'freedom', for parents of a child with Autism, the long journey has just begun. In fact its a little like running a 13 year long marathon!! But as with all achievements in life, with some careful planning, the willingness to ask some tough questions and lots ...

Oh here we go ...that ‘joyful’ time of the year again. End of school awards nights, Christmas concerts, change in routine and lots of expectations... all the stuff that is supposed to be joyful and exciting, but for many families living with ASD, can mean stress and the constant watch for meltdowns!
Some ASD children thrive during the holidays with all expectations and school routines removed, whilst for others, the lack of routine and structure can cause great consternation.
But by planning ...

When I am speaking to different groups about Asperger's and Autism, one question that often comes up is how to deal with obsessive behaviours. Many parents are concerned that the obsessions their children are focused on are narrow and can appear to be limiting.
Most children with Asperger's and Autism have a certain thing they are obsessed about. It can often be very frustrating for parents and teachers to guide these young people into turning their obsessions into a something ...
