This week we are featuring another personal story  from  one of our our David's Gift families. Today's story is from Irene, whose son 13 year old son Lachlan has  diagnosed with both Asperger's syndrome and ADHD.   Her explanation of how a rewards chart works for Lachlan may give other parents some ideas about how to implement this in their families. Asperger’s Syndrome from a Father’s Perspective

We have had a couple of extremely busy weeks here at David's Gift! Unfortunately, we have had issues with our web site, which are slowly being fixed. Hopefully our new re-vamped site will be up and running soon. We are not sure if the site was hacked, or there are just technical gremlins working behind the scenes, but with anything of this nature, when something untoward happens, it is also a great time to revisit your own direction and make some ...

Living with Autism …. Kris’ Story

This week I came across a page on Facebook entitled ' Autism Gratitude Project, it's a task to complete throughout the month of April, Autism Awareness Month. I thought this blog article, from my friend Kris Barrett, was a perfect fit! Kris and I met through mutual friends and fellow ASD mothers.  We correspond regularly via facebook and have enjoyed a couple of hysterical, emotion-charged lunch gatherings with other mums. When we all get together we have to allow at least ...

Fiona’s experience with Asperger’s

Since the release of David's Gift last year, and I have come across many families who are traveling very similar Autism and Asperger's syndrome journey's.  I just love hearing their stories, and I know that in hearing others' stories we can learn so much from them. This week, I am commencing a special 'guest blogger' spot, where I will feature an article from a reader who maybe a parent, a teacher or somebody who is working in the field of Autism ...

Cyberbullying and Autism – 10 Tips to Help Keep our Children Safe

Whilst many children on the Autism spectrum experience bullying, the one threat that they are most prone to is Cyberbullying. Many children with Asperger's and Autism love spending time online, and interacting with friendship sites such as Facebook, Twitter, forums or chatrooms.  Online friendships can be less threatening and less stressful as they are often able to connect with people, just like them, all over the world. However, with any online activity, whilst it can be fun and interesting,  there ...

Autism Spectrum – Obsessions, School and the interpretation of intelligence

Recently, I read an article about Temple Grandin, who was diagnosed with autism at an early age.  She was encouraging businesses to employ those on the Autism spectrum - not for equality reasons - but because a person with Autism often has the ability to become an expert in their field and create the change that drives innovation in business.  She is a fabulous advocate for Autism and the strengths that those diagnosed with ASD bring ...

Time out for Dads in the Asperger’s journey

I have recently become a fan of the show Parenthood.  I initially resisted watching the show because it is starts at 9:30pm here in Australia. But, a friend of mine suggested I watch it as one of the characters was diagnosed with Asperger's. It didn't take long for me to get hooked! The story is about the 'Braverman' family. There are four children, and each of those children have children also.  But the family who most intrigues me are Adam and Kristina ...

If you have a child with Asperger’s …. you have to watch this!

Introducing James Durbin, a 21 year old man from San Francisco who has been diagnosed with Asperger's and Tourette's Syndrome. He was the last contestant to appear on the recent American Idol auditions. It takes a long time to get to the point that this young man has got to, and in his pre-audition interview James gave an insight into what life has been like for him. Then half way through the interview he says "I was diagnosed with Tourette's ...

Asperger’s Syndrome 10 years on…Things haven’t changed much have they?

I recently received an email from a reader of David's Gift.

Now I receive emails all the time, but this particular email was very sad.

The reader described to me the experiences of her 15 year old son at his school. It could have been a chapter straight out of David's Gift. She was describing things today that were the same as my story of the way things were - 10 years ago!

So why
