You are very welcome Jodi, yes it is the type of news that just sends chills through every parent raising a child on the spectrum, because of the judgments of others... AGAIN!! It's those who read a little and only hear what they want to hear that are concerning. There are so many armchair experts xo

Today I have been reading & making my way through your web seminars. I am very glad my sister passed this link on to me. Especially after I read through your "that's not how people with Asperger's think". I have finally achieved getting my son into a small local rural mainstream school & we have worked hard at being open & approachable to the parents / students regarding Connor's difficulties. When this horribly tragic situation occured & then the media reporting of the Aspergers diagnosis...it made me a little nervous as to how we will be treated once school begins again. I am glad to find something that helps me to communicate what I believe. so Thank you Sally.

looking for something completely unique.

Hi Julie,
Welcome to our site. You are in good company here, so many parents are in exactly the same place as you are. If you are on Facebook our Asperger's Parent Connect page is a place where you can connect with others going through exactly the same emotions as you are. It is a road well traveled by so many of us. For me, the realization that the 'stress' I was feeling was real and normal, allowed me to move forward towards wholeness and authenticity. Back then, I kept thinking there was something wrong with me because I wasn't coping. I can now see how so much of my life during that time was dominated by stress and feelings of in-confidence. It's such a powerful feeling to know that what I was living through was highly stressful, and the feelings I had because of that were perfectly normal. As parents we are way too hard on ourselves, thinking we have to cope with it all. Taking time for you, and your relationship, is imperative because it is then that both of your children will benefit. Much love to you, please feel free to connect and ask any questions you need answers to. Sallyxo

I have not yet found out how to make time to care for myself. My son is 7 with high functioning autism and my husband and I work in the medical field. We do not have family here and have not made many close friends as my son gets very upset when I talk to others in his presence. We are busy, we are tired and we are stressed. We love my son and his 4 year old sister more than anything (like any parent) but today was a really tough day and I've silently declared my New Years resolution is to get some help. I stumbled upon your YouTube video and cried as I heard what you had to say. Thank you. I plan to read your book.

I too was truly shocked and saddened by this event and then the subsequent information that the gunman had aspergers. I read that his mother was a gun enthusiast and took her son to the shooting range to teach her son how to shoot. I watched a news video where a former babysitter (male) had been instructed to never leave the boy unattended, not even to go to the bathroom himself (the sitter that is). My first thought that there was definitely more going on with this boy than just aspergers. But how very, very sad. I have friends on facebook that are wondering whether the anti psychotic drugs he was possibly on were to blame. We will probably never know the truth. Just as with the Batman movie shooting event.

I have to agree with your son. It breaks my heart that lack of knowledge leads people to grasp for the one word "diagnosis" they may know and not take the time to truly understand it. I suppose it makes them feel more secure--despite being a "partial truth" (that he had Asperger's may be fact but it is not the reason for this tragedy.)
I studied Asperger's as part of my post-graduate education in a neurological field and have many friends with this distinctive neurological "patterning" (sounds so much nicer to my ears than whatI usually read). This patterning is not a psychosis and does not belong in that "box" in our minds today. I pray that education makes this clear in the wake of what has happened.

Hello Sally, I am just like David. I am so heartbroken by the events on the weekend. I have always been an avid student of military history and also as a sideline about guns. On Sunday I threw away a lot of books dealing with guns. I didn't want to take the chance with my boy. What happened was so wrong - no one will ever understand it. All those little lives destroyed. What can you say....

You are right, until bullying for children on the spectrum is treated differently, it won't change. Bullies usually do so because of a learned behaviour and our children on the spectrum react because they are pushed to the limit. But unfortunately schools put all bullying incidents into the one bag and treat all children the same. It's not working, as you said. I hope things are getting better for your brother

RebekahWell, your video has been removed, but I can imignae what it was like. This topic always gets to me because my brother was bullied. And, sure enough, when he stood up for himself, he got in trouble, too. I don't think he ever really resorted to violence but the two boys got into enough of a fight that they were both in trouble. He was bullied continuously by the same boy and even though the school knew about it, nothing they did actually changed anything. Perhaps the bullying changed forms (physical to verbal) but it continued. At one point my dad actually went directly to the parents of the other boy and told them if it didn't stop he would press charges. I feel my brother had every right to defend himself if he were getting physically bullied. In fact, my dad even taught him basic ways of doing so in case anything happened. Unfortunately, teachers and schools often have little recourse to effectively discipline the bullies. My brother and the bully, for example, had to write a letter explaining how they felt and what happened. I'm not quite sure how that teaches the bully that the behaviour is unacceptable or the bullied child that the school is on their side to defend and protect them. I'm not sure what can be done to stop bullies but I'm pretty certain that what is done now is not usually effective. A slap on the wrist and a go play nice doesn't work once the kids are back on the playground.
